(14/02/2012) The poem "To my children..." was found in a treasure box along with Katherine's pictures and memories of her boys. Please pass it on.
To my children...
Just for this morning, I am going to smile when I see your face and laugh when I feel like crying.
Just for this morning, I will let you choose what you want to wear and smile and say how perfect it is.
Just for this morning, I am going to step over the laundry and pick you up and take you to the park to play.
Just for this morning, I will leave the dishes in the sink and let you teach me how to put that puzzle of yours together.
Just for this afternoon, I will unplug the telephone and keep the computer off and sit with you in the backyard and blow bubbles.
Just for this afternoon, I will not yell once, not even a tiny grumble when you scream and whine for ice cream and I will buy you one if the ice cream truck comes by.
Just for this afternoon, I won't worry about what you are going to be when you grow up or second guess every decision I have made where you are concerned.
Just for this afternoon, I will let you help me bake cookies and I won't stand over you trying to fix them.
Just for this afternoon, I will take us to McDonalds and buy us each a Happy Meals so you can have both toys.
Just for this evening, I will hold you in my arms and tell you a story about how you were born and how much I love you.
Just for this evening, I will let you splash in the tub and not get angry.
Just for this evening, I will let you stay up late while we sit on the porch and count all the stars.
Just for this evening I will snuggle beside you for hours and miss my favourite TV show.
Just for this evening, when I run my fingers through your hair as you pray, I will simply be grateful that God has given me the greatest gift ever given. I will think about the mothers who are searching for their missing children, the mothers who are visiting their children graves, instead of their bedrooms, and the mothers who are in the hospital room watching their children suffer senselessly and screaming inside that they cannot handle it anymore.
And when I kiss you tonight, I will hold you a little tighter a little longer. It is then, that I will thank God for you and ask him for nothing except ONE MORE DAY...
Please pass this on to other mothers. I think that we get too involved in our daily routines that we tend to forget what great gifts our children really are. We never know if God is going to give us one more day.
From the Family of Katherine (Bunny) Newman
(16/01/2012) Katherine Newman's family would like to sincerely and with heartfelt gratitude thank all those who have through kindness and caring comforted us in our time of grief. In this time of unfathomable tragedy your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
Many have been asking how they can best help Katherine's three boys who are now without both their parents. The family is grateful for this outpouring of concern and has set up an Education and Care Fund for her children to be administered by their family.
Those who wish to contribute to helping rebuild these boys' lives can make a donation at any Bank of Montreal Transit#: 0006 Account#: 3984-238 or by clicking on this Donate button here:
All funds collected will go directly to securing the well-being and care of young James, Joshua and Thomas.
While some continue to have questions about the circumstances behind these tragic events, due to the continuing police investigation and in sensitivity to the three young survivors, there will be no further comment from the family. Katherine was a wonderful woman who we loved deeply and her single concern was her children, therefore, out of respect for her memory, the family will only respond to questions about the boys' Education and Care Fund. Ensuring that they have a promising future and helping them rebuild after this senseless act is our sole interest.
Again, thank you to family and friends who have expressed their condolences. Our hearts are broken and the pain we all feel is overwhelming. Though we can never replace the loss of Katherine's light from our lives, we have three living reminders of the love she brought to us, and to this world, and we will always be endlessly thankful for them.
